Yet, if having an abundance of leaders is such a great thing, what accounts for the enduring popularity of maxims warning against having too many leaders?

“Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.”

“Too many cooks spoil the broth.”

Does bringing together a large number of leaders eventually backfire?

Dream Team or Nightmare?

On July 8^th, LeBron James announced his decision to play basketball with the Miami Heat, joining fellow All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The sports world buzzed with the news, and pundits predicted that the trio would dominate the NBA. Before they ever stepped on a court together, many anointed the supergroup as the greatest team of all-time.

However, the alliance of James, Wade, and Bosh got off to a rocky start. The Heat dropped their season opener to the Boston Celtics on their way to losing eight of their first seventeen games. Later, they suffered the embarrassment of losing to LeBron James’ former team, and one of the worst squads in the league, the Cleveland Cavaliers. As defeats mounted, so did criticism of the team and its players. Analysts labeled the Heat as a collection of whiners and disparaged their uneven performance.

Learning to Serve

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once referred to the selfishness of players as the greatest challenge facing a coach. In his observation, most players were more concerned with making themselves better than with improving the team. As a result, he discovered that combining the best players seldom resulted in the best team. When crafting a championship lineup, he looked for unselfish players who “showed an eagerness to lose themselves to the group for the goal of the team.”

The Miami Heat nearly succumbed to the selfishness of its superstars, each of whom had been the undisputed leader of his team prior to joining together. The problem for the Heat has not been having too much leadership, but having three players accustomed to excelling at the same role. James, Wade, and Bosh were each the primary scorers on their respective clubs last year. It has taken the trio time, and concerted effort, to learn how best to contribute their considerable talents as a team.

To their credit James, Bosh, and Wade have not sniped at one another following the team’s setbacks, and they have dedicated themselves to unselfishly serving and supporting one another. Instead of competing for the same role, they are learning how to complete one another. Bosh has adjusted to being a rebounder and secondary scoring option, and Wade now generally defers to James on the offensive end of the floor during crunch time of key games. The players’ commitment to winning as a team, as opposed to excelling individually, has reaped dividends. Presently, the Heat are on the cusp of winning the NBA championship and fulfilling the lofty expectations placed on them before the season started.

As the Heat have discovered during the course of their first season together, the bottom line in leadership isn’t how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance the team. Subtracting from others is unintentional. Adding to others takes intentional focus. This month, consider where you can make adjustments to your performance to better serve the teammates beside you.

Trust Me

My son John-Peter recently finished his first year of college. He did very well and I'm proud of him. When he's home, we've been (slowly) going through the book of Proverbs together. As a dad, I was enthusiastic for obvious reasons about John soaking in the beginning of Proverbs chapter 3.

 "My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. " Proverbs 3:1-2. On occasion, these words have been more literal than not! (smile) And John-Peter is a great young man! In the biblical context from our Father in Heaven, these words have far greater impact, and to all of us, not just fathers and sons.

John-Peter trusts me as I walk him through these Scriptures. You either trust someone or you don't. If you say, "I'm not sure if I trust her." You don't. When I give my car keys to my son, either I trust him or I don't. I don't sort of trust him, or trust him a little. As I guide my son through these young adult years, he either trusts me or he doesn't. And I'm so glad he does, because trust is a choice. Trust is an intentional act of the will, not a fuzzy feeling that we sometimes have and sometimes misplace.

The absence or presence of trust is a core factor in life, so much so that whether its business, church, family or just a couple good friends meeting for coffee, it sets the stage for success or failure. The relationship at the center of all your success or failure is the one you experience with God. And just in case we missed it, He makes this point clear in His word.

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. Proverbs 3:5-10

Trust doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's not just a front-end risk or a back-end reward. It's not merely a promise without accountability. It's not a principle without activity. Trust is a word that is alive and dynamic and it operates in a complex and moving context.

The following five points relate to everyone, but to you as a leader in particular about your trust in God. As a leader, you coach others to trust God. In order for you to do that well, it's good to check-in on your own trust in God. The following is a sequence of connected components that build trust.

• Love

Faith is the foundation for your belief in God. Love is the foundation for your trust in God. We often talk in terms of trust being based on character and competence. On a merely human level, there is great truth to that. In fact, you can love someone but not trust them. But it doesn't work that way with God. Trust and love are connected. If you love Him, and know He loves you, you trust Him. Verse 5 says "with all your heart"; that's what it takes to fully trust God. It's that trust that allows you to lean into Him.

• Lean

" . . . lean not on your own understanding" (v. 5) Honestly, which way do you lean? In order to respond, you need to think about where you lean for your answers, solutions and direction when you are under pressure. It's too easy lean to God for wisdom when everything is going fine. It's when you're under pressure that you either instinctively depend upon God or depend upon yourself. If your church isn't growing, or your marriage is struggling, or your health is challenged – whatever the case may be, do you really trust God? Or do you try to "fix" it on your own? It is a partnership, your part and God's part, but if you trust Him, He takes the lead. If you lean into God, you will learn.

• Learn
God is the source of all truth and wisdom. You can't help but to learn from God when you love Him and lean into Him. What have you learned lately from God? What is He saying to you? How have you responded?

Psalm 25:1-5 captures the heart of this well. 1To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; 2 in you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 3 No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse. 4 Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Do you trust enough what God is teaching you to act on it?

• Live

When you learn, you live better. You live stronger and at a higher level. Proverbs 3:8 says: "This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." Let me back up one verse to explain. Proverbs 3:7 is saying that pride and being puffed up with yourself is stupid. Fear God and do the right thing. If you live this way, your physical health and well-being will benefit. How literal you want to take this is up to you. Of course there are Godly people who are ill. When this happens we all have questions. Your trust may be tested. In those times I often remember a quote by C.H. Spurgeon: "God is too good to be unkind. He is too wise to be confused. If I cannot trace His hand, I can always trust His heart." Wherever you land on this matter, remember that resisting God brings so much stress that your health is impacted in a negative way. Either way, you live better with God.

• Lead

Loving God, leaning into God, learning from God, and living for God will result in significantly improved leadership. You can't help but to lead better following this pattern of trust in God. I don't think this is easy, but I do think it's true.

Love God with your whole heart. Lean into Him not yourself. Learn and take action on what you learn. Live fully for God.

This article may feel a bit more like a "sermon" for leaders. . . but every once in a while that's a good thing! Trust Him.

Christ's Pain, We Gain

Hebrews 9:27-28 Just as man destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

We heard this saying many times: No pain, no gain. But we have gained something not because of our pain, but because of Christ's pain.

PAIN of Christ brought us:

P - Pardon

Christ’s pain at the cross brought forgiveness of our sins. Hebrews 9:28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people. The one-time sacrificed of Christ is powerful enough to take away the sins of many people. Legally speaking, a pardon will be enforceable only upon the acceptance of that pardon. Without acceptance, it will have no effect. The pardon God is offering is for all the people, but only those who are willing to accept that pardon will be forgiven. Those only who believe and accept Christ Jesus will be pardoned. The uniqueness of God’s forgiveness is this: Hebrews 10:17 "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."

A - Access

We have now a direct access to God without the intervention of any person (priest, pastor, or even any righteous people). During Christ’s crucifixion in Matthew 27:50-51 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. What does this mean? Before, only the high priest can enter the Most Holy Place. The Most Holy Place was separated by a curtain (not ordinary curtain but a thick and heavy curtain) that no one can enter but only the High Priest. But when Jesus died at the cross, the curtain was torn from top to bottom, which means, that the Most Holy Place, the very presence of God, can be access now directly by anyone. This was confirmed by Hebrews 10:19-21 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God. Jesus himself is our Great Priest, a priest without sin and a High Priest forever. We have now an access to the Most Holy presence of God through Jesus Christ.

I - Inheritance

God has promise us eternal life.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Also in Hebrews 9:15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may received the promised eternal inheritance - now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from sins committed under the first covenant.

And Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believe, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession - to the praise of His glory.

This means that God’s promise of eternal life to us is received only through Jesus Christ. The Bible said in John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him. Without Jesus, we will have no eternal life.

N - New Life

John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave us right to become children of God.

2 Corinthian 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things has gone, the new has come!

Also in Ephesians 4:22-24 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires  to be made new in the attitude of your minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

We become children of God when we received Jesus. We have now a new relationship. These verses mean that our God is now our Father and we are His children. Our old life, which is being corrupted by deceitful desires, will be changed, and God will give us a new life – a new life in holiness and righteousness.

How could we value God's pain? We value God's PAIN by our GAIN:

G - Gratefulness or Gratitude

We should express our thanks and appreciation to God through our worship and our service.

Hebrews 13:15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that confess his name.

Romans 12:1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

A - Accomplishment

God has commanded us to accomplish something.

Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age

Matthew 24:14  And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.

God is much concerned with our accomplishment, not just our involvement.

Philippians 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:29 because to you it hath been granted in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer in his behalf

2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

These verses tell us that God is pleased when we do and accomplished His plan in this world.

I - Importance

God should be our priority. In Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you as well. And Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. God is pleased when we set our minds on the things God is concern.

Do everything for God's pleasure. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

When we make God our priority and doing his will not for our pleasure but for His pleasure, we are able to prove to God that He is more important than anything in this world.

N - No more sinning                                            

Do not waste God’s sacrifice and sufferings by going back to your old life.

2 Peter 2:20-22 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit," and, "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud."

Hebrews 10:26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left

God has suffered pain by sacrificial death to forgive us and save us. Go on now with your new life in Christ and sin no more.

Romans 6:12-13 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do no offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

Some employees like their boss for reasons far removed from the actual function of an employer. "He lets me leave early every Tuesday so I can take my kid to soccer practice." Or, "She paid for my trip to New York." Generous, yes, but these kinds of things generally fall more under the category of a "nice person" and not necessarily a "good boss."

I know the word boss meets with different opinions. In the 90's "boss" was out and "team leader" was in. Every 5-10 years there is a new preference. I'm not sure what is "in" right now. My twenty-something friends say it doesn't really matter, just keep it short and simple – so "boss" it is at least for this edition of the Pastor's Coach. This article is in many ways a declaration that it doesn't matter what word you use, from supervisor to manager, there are good leaders and bad ones – and a few in between who are just average. If you are responsible for one employee, dozens, or hundreds I'm sure you want to be a great boss.

In October 2010 the most expensive public works project in America, ARC, officially met its demise. The project would have constructed two tunnels beneath the Hudson River to add much-needed railways between New Jersey and Manhattan. However, poor planning led to wasteful spending and put the project on pace to exceed its budget by at least $1 billion.

A federal audit of the project brought to light an embarrassing lack of planning. The audit charged NJ Transit with failing to draw up plans to combat fraud and waste in its financial practices. The same audit chastised the FTA for authorizing NJ Transit to spend $1.35 billion without having seen a project management plan, master schedule, or financial plan from the agency. On account of ARC's runaway costs and inadequate strategic plans, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie decided to cancel the project.

But that’s the condition of man because of his sin. That is the same condition where we came from. In spite of that, still, God wants us to be with Him to be included in His family; and God wants us to be an instrument to tell the all people that He wants us all to be included in His family lists.

Do's and Dont's of a Great Employee

What side of the desk do you sit on? The majority of vocational church leaders will never experience both sides. In fact, it is likely that you are either a Senior Pastor or employed by one. My vantage point is somewhat unique. I've never planted a church or been a Senior Pastor. I've always been a pastor employed by someone. And yet, serving as an Executive Pastor for over twenty years, and currently responsible for about 85 staff, offers me a unique view -- a view from both sides of the desk. 

Over these years I've worked with hundreds of staff. Some in the churches I've served and many in churches I've consulted. With some risk of oversimplifying, I'm going to offer a list of do's and don'ts for great employees. This may help you as an employee or help you train the employees you are responsible for.

Reading the Trends of Change

On February 16^th, news outlets reported that Borders bookstores had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The bookseller chain planned to shutter 30% of its stores, or 200 locations, nationwide. Analysts are skeptical whether the slimmed-down Borders will even be able to survive. God's Way in Bringing Justice

1 Peter 3:8-12 “Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so may you inherit a blessing. For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Somebody may not be treating you right. There are some who are telling lies about you trying to ruin your reputation. Maybe you were cheated in a business deal and you lost lot of money. Or maybe somebody is telling lie about you and it hinders your promotion. And because of these things, you want them to pay you back. You want to take revenge. But Jesus is telling us right now, "Remember what people did to me. I was beaten. I was insulted. I was crucified. I suffered at the cross because of your sins. But I never fought back." If you want to live your best life now, learn to trust God to bring justice in your life. Let God bring you justice in His own way, not our way. God's way is far better than our way.

A final word from the Supreme Court 

The issue that seems to take center stage at present is - whether or not the Supreme Court, in the exercise of its constitutionally mandated power of Judicial Review with respect to recent initiatives of the legislature and the executive department, is exercising undue interference. Is the Highest Tribunal, which is expected to be the protector of the Constitution, itself guilty of violating fundamental tenets like the doctrine of separation of powers? Time and again, this issue has been addressed by the Court, but it seems that the present political situation calls for it to once again explain the legal basis of its action lest it continually be accused of being a hindrance to the nation’s thrust to progress.

Surmounting the Limitations of Vision

For centuries, astronomers have looked skyward, curiously beholding the stars above them. Over time, scientists steadily improved their vision of outer space by engineering telescopes of ever-increasing sophistication. However, the biggest advance in the ability to peer into the heavens came with the launch of the Hubble Telescope in 1990. No longer bound to the ground, astronomers could now view interstellar space free from atmospheric distortions. For more than 20 years, the Hubble Telescope has orbited the Earth, capturing images of stars, planets, and galaxies in stunning color and detail. Browsing a gallery of Hubble's images (http://www.hubblesite.com) offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into the beauty of the vast recesses beyond our solar system.

Leaders, like astronomers, must learn to overcome the limitations to their vision and the distortions of their vision. We all have impartial vision, regardless of our creativity and imagination. Our perception of the future is hampered by our incomplete knowledge, the finite amount of information we're able to make sense of, and the boundaries of our experiences. Also, after looking at our problems for a while, we habituate ourselves to them until eventually our vision fails to register them. Furthermore, our vision is distorted by our tendency to view the world, not as it is, but as we are. 

Vision: What’s Love Got to Do with It?

Where does vision come from? How does a leader develop a clear vision for the future?
At the earliest stages, the word "vision" may be somewhat misleading, portraying vision as a picture that we can see. The birthplace of vision isn't the mind's eye, but the heart. In the beginning, visionaries are guided by passion not sight. They must feel their way in the dark at first, and only through time do they gain a mental image of what the future could look like.

Vision is what you want to do in life, not only what you think should be done. I can think of a thousand noble causes, but only a select few resonate with my heart. Vision begins as a compelling want or desire. The genesis of vision isn't purely an intellectual exercise; it involves monitoring your passions.

Cut the Bitterness in Your Heart

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Ephesians 4:31-32)

God has given us a new life to enjoy and to live in peace. But some of us still cannot move on. The reason why it happens to them is because there is still a yoke of bitterness in their lives. They are imprisoned by their past pain and bitterness. All of us has these pain and bitterness in the past but don't let these prevent us to move on and enjoy life God has given. We have a choice, we can chose to be imprisoned by our pain and become bitter, or we can choose to be free and let God handles everything.
